Sam Fender's new album

The follow-up to September 2019’s Number 1 album‘Hypersonic Missiles’, ‘Seventeen Going Under’ was recorded in Sam Fender’s native North Shields and produced with Bramwell Bronte.

Previously speaking about his second album, Sam has said that his upcoming work is "miles better" than anything he has released before.

Sam also added: "Lyrically, the first one was more looking outwards, and this one’s very much about myself and North Shields and about my friends and family, it’s very much about home."

When was his new album released?

Sam Fender released 'Seventeen Going Under' on Friday 8th October 2021 through Polydor Records - two years after the release of 'Hypersonic Missiles.'

The singer, famed for huge tracks such as 'Dead Boys', 'Will We Talk?' and 'The Borders' and whose debut album flew to the Number 1 spot in the UK, previously teased that he had new music on the way this year (2021) by sharing a post to Instagram and captioning: 'HERE WE GO AGAIN. HOLD TIGHT. 2 DAYS'.

Despite his debut album being released back in 2019, fans haven't been left hanging in the two-year gap, with the singer releasing the tracks 'Hold Out' and 'Winter Song' in 2020. He even premiered his unique cover of Metallica's 'Sad But True' in June 2021, and released his new album's title track on 7th July.

Sam Fender's new song

As a taster for the album, Sam Fender has premiered the anthemic title track ‘Seventeen Going Under’ and its accompanying video.

The lead single is billed as ‘an emphatic, soaring guitar song that collates the struggles of unemployed life, but also the daftness of age where you otherwise have little to fear and the world at your feet.’

Sam also released his track 'Spit Of You' on 6th October, just ahead of the album's release. Releasing a music video alongside the chilled out track, we even see Stephen Graham star as Sam's dad.

How many tracks does it have?

'Seventeen Going Under' features 11 tracks - Seventeen Going Under, Getting’ Started, Aye, Get You Down, Long Way Off, Spit Of You, Last To Make It Home, The Leveller, Mantra, Paradigms and The Dying Light.

Sam had plenty of songs to choose from! Speaking about going into the studio to work on his forthcoming album, the singer said: "I’ve got 40 odd songs written for the second one."

Despite Sam not confirming any official collaborations on the album, he revealed to us back in December that he had written a song with none other than Sir Elton John himself. He added: "Nobody’s heard it but… but yeah. Probably not on my album, we may just release it as like a thing together."

What is the album about?

Intensely autobiographical, Sam Fender says of ‘Seventeen Going Under’: “This album is a coming-of-age story. It’s about growing up. It’s a celebration of life after hardship, and it’s a celebration of surviving.”

According to Sam Fender’s label, the album ‘Seventeen Going Under’ is ‘defiant’, ‘brave’ and ‘celebratory.’

They add: ‘It finds Sam turning the mirror on himself; his adolescence and the trials and tribulations of growing up. It’s a relatable journey that careers through an often misspent youth, navigating tumultuous relationships with both friends and family, and trying to figure out what comes next and how to get there.

‘North Shields is the ever-present backdrop for these deeply personal vignettes of a young life travelling breathlessly from nought to sixty, hauling on the breaks and zipping back again from where he started. Over the course of the record, these stunning songs chronicle all the cherished memories, tricky encounters, and events that Sam cannot unsee.

'It’s the story of a young teen losing not only his innocence, but then finding strength to stagger blindly into adulthood and all that entails.’
