There is an appeal for witnesses after a 19 year-old woman was hit by a van and left seriously injured in Ayr.

The 19 year-old was struck while crossing Seafield Road at its junction with Racecourse Road around 4.10pm on Friday afternoon. The van was a Renault Master.

The woman was taken by ambulance to University Hospital Ayr, then later transferred to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow where she is being treated for a head injury. Hospital staff describe her condition as critical.

Inspector Greg Dinnie from the Divisional Road Policing Unit said: “The 19 year-old woman was crossing the road with her friend when she was struck by the van. This is a very busy junction and I would urge any witnesses to this crash, who have not yet spoken to police to contact us.

“I would also ask anyone driving on this road near this junction around the time of the crash who has dash-cam footage to contact us. Anyone with any information that may assist our ongoing investigation is asked to contact us through 101 quoting reference number 2159 of 5 March.”
