Residents in an East Ayrshire street were left shocked after a car was set ablaze in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Wilful fire

Officers are investigating a deliberate fire that occurred around 2am on Thursday June 2 in Newland Place, Onthank in Kilmarnock.

Emergency services were called to the scene where a white Kia Venga was torched in the middle of the night in somebody's driveway

Police appeal

Detectives are appealing for witnesses surrounding the incident and asking the public to report anything they might have seen out of the ordinary.

They have since confirmed no one was hurt during the incident and the blaze didn’t spread to any of the properties on Newland Place, but the vehicle was extensively damaged.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service are treating the incident as a wilfully raised fire.

Police Statement

Detective Constable Ross Brierley, Kilmarnock CID, said: "The car was parked in the drive of the house when it was set alight. Thankfully the fire did not spread to the house and the occupants were not injured, however, the car has been extensively damaged.

"Officers are carrying out door to door enquiries and checking local CCTV in the area but would appeal to anyone who may have seen people acting suspiciously around the vehicle or in the area between 1.45 am and 2am to get in touch. We would ask that if you have any private CCTV or doorbell cameras, that the footage is checked just in case anything relevant has been captured.

"If you have any information that you think may assist officers with their enquiries, then please call police via 101 quoting reference number 0315 of Thursday, 2 June, 2022. Details can also be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
