Thousands of people in Irvine have had their water supply restored after a main pipe burst which left households and businesses without water overnight.

Around 2,500 properties were affected by the damaged water main in the Tarryholme area of the town and eventually had their supply restored in the early hours of this morning.

Some customers will experience lower than normal water pressure or discoloured water until the issue is fully resolved.

Scottish Water has urged property owners in the vicinity who may have been affected by flooding to get in touch so that assistance can be provided.

Engineers are on site near Shewalton Road, working to excavate and repair the damaged trunk main in order to restore normal service to the local water network.

A spokesperson for Scottish Water said: “We would like to apologise to customers in Irvine who experienced disruption to their water supply yesterday evening or this morning – and thank them for their patience while we are working to restore normal service as quickly as we can.

“Our work last night enabled us to restore supply to the homes and businesses that were initially affected. We continue to monitor the performance of the temporary supply arrangements in place and are now focused on completing a challenging repair to the trunk main.

“As a result of temporary changes to the normal flows of water through the network, some customers are experiencing lower than normal water pressure or discoloured water. These issues will be resolved once the repair is complete and the water network can return to normal operation.”

Regular updates will be provided on Scottish Water’s website.
