A number of children are being tested by doctors after coming across a discarded needle in Irvine. The group made the discovery on Sunday 4th March next to the Reburn Community Centre.

The community centre sits right next to Castelpark Primary in the town.

The aunt of one of the boys involved said, "My nephew was at hospital last night (Tuesday 6th March) getting his blood tested. He's to go every four weeks for jags now and every six weeks for more blood tests.

"It's absolutely ridiculous. Especially next to a school. There shouldn't be stuff like that lying about.

"My nephew is so upset and is off school today because of it.

"This area isn't normally that bad but it isn't the first time kids have been picking up needles.

"These users need to get their act together and not do it an area where they could be kids about."

Police Scotland have confirmed they're investigating the incident and say enquiries are ongoing.

NHS Ayrshire and Arran have given us the following statement: NHS Ayrshire & Arran’s Public Health Department has been made aware of an incident where a group of young children discovered a discarded needle outside a local facility.

A risk assessment was carried out on the children involved. While the risk of exposure to any blood borne virus is extremely low, NHS Ayrshire & Arran has taken some precautions to ensure the health and safety of the children involved.

We would like to take this opportunity to remind members of the public, particularly children, not to pick up or touch any discarded needles, and to inform the local authority, who will arrange for the needle to be removed.

A North Ayrshire Council spokesman said: We were notified of the incident by our partners at Police Scotland and our Streetscene officers visited the site on Monday and removed a number of needles. The team are carrying out further checks today. We would urge anyone to contact us if they come across discarded needles and we will remove them safely.

“The parents have been offered support and guidance through the local primary school. We have contacted North Ayrshire Council for comment.
