Warning After Garage Fire In Ardrossan

Published 14th Sep 2015

There is a warning from fire fighters in Ayrshire following a blaze in a garage.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) crews were sent to the incident at Anderson Terrace in Ardrossan in response to a 999 call made shortly before 3:45pm.

Two appliances from Ardrossan Community Fire Station reached the scene within five minutes to find an already well-developed fire and a third appliance was sent from Kilwinning to assist firefighting operations.

Watch Manager David Ballingall, the incident commander, said: “The fire began in a garage before spreading to both the attached house and a neighbouring garage.

“Six firefighters in breathing apparatus were committed. They conducted a search to confirm everyone was accounted for and used several high pressure jets to bring the fire under control.”

Ambulance personnel provided treatment to a man who had sustained superficial burns and a woman who appeared to be suffering from the effects of breathing in smoke, with the man then taken to Crosshouse Hospital.

SFRS crews conducted cutting away operations to ensure the fire was fully extinguished before leaving the scene around 6:35pm.

Advice to help householders reduce the chance of a fire starting or causing injuries is available at the ‘Your Safety’ section of the SFRS website, www.firescotland.gov.uk.

Garages and sheds often contain fire hazards such as petrol, large quantities of paper, tins of paint or gas bottles for barbeques.

Keeping a garage or shed clear of clutter and flammable liquids reduces the risk of a fire happening and fitting them with working smoke alarms means householders would get early warning if a fire does start.

Free home fire safety visits are available throughout Scotland and can be arranged by calling the freephone number 0800 073 1999, by texting ‘FIRE’ to 80800 or by filling in an online form at www.firescotland.gov.uk.

Arranged for a time to suit the householder and taking only around 20 minutes to complete, the visits allow local crews to highlight risks many people are unaware exist within their homes.

The firefighters help residents take simple steps to stay safe and even provide and install free smoke alarms where these are found to be needed.
