Detective Sergeant Paul Richmond said:

“This unprovoked attack has left a young woman extremely distressed and upset and it’s imperative we trace the man responsible. Our enquiries carried out so far have revealed that there may have been someone out walking their dog around the time of the incident and I would appeal to that person to contact us. Although the incident occurred in the early hours of the morning, it’s possible someone saw the suspect running off, perhaps you were on your way home from a night out and noticed him running away or saw something which appeared a little suspicious. If you have any information or knowledge regarding this incident, please contact us as soon as possible - what you know could prove vital in our investigation so please do pass it on.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact CID officers at Saltcoats Police Office on 101. Alternatively, please call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be given anonymously.
