More than 1600 temporary workers are being recruited by Royal Mail Group to help sort and deliver the Christmas post.

Royal Mail has launched a drive to recruit 1,340 people to work in mail, distribution centres and data centres across Scotland over the festive season.

Meanwhile Parcelforce Worldwide, the group's express parcels business, will recruit more than 300 people to work as drivers and sorting staff.

Temporary positions across a variety of shifts will be available between mid-November through to early January 2015 with the peak of the extra work in December.

Across the UK, Royal Mail and Parcelforce Worldwide are recruiting for around 19,000 seasonal roles.

Royal Mail spokesman Rob Jenson said: Christmas is our busiest time of year.

We plan all year round to help ensure we deliver the best possible service for consumers and businesses in Scotland and across the UK.

Every Christmas, we make a substantial commitment in additional resources to handle the festive mailbag, including the recruitment of thousands of temporary workers.''

The company said that the recruitment programme is part of Royal Mail's substantial financial investment'' in additional resources at Christmas to help ensure it provides the best possible postal service to its customers throughout the UK.

It also has a year-round recruitment drive where it recruits postmen and women into its Delivery Offices around the UK.

A range of permanent and temporary delivery roles are available in sites across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
