Rail Services To Resume After Derailed Train Removed

Published 17th Aug 2015

Engineering work to clear a freight train which derailed more than two weeks ago will be completed in time for normal service to resume today, rail chiefs have said.

One locomotive and 18 freight wagons derailed near Cumnock in Ayrshire at around 11.20am on Saturday August 1.

No-one was injured as a result of the incident, which is currently under investigation by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB).

To clear the line, engineers constructed an access road to the derailment site and created an area where a 1,000-tonne crane could be placed to remove the vehicles.

The line was cleared on Friday, and repair work then started on the damaged tracks.

The ScotRail Alliance confirmed the engineering work will be completed in time for start of service tomorrow morning.

A spokeswoman said: We are pleased to confirm that the line near Cumnock has been cleared, and the damaged tracks are being repaired.

Services between Glasgow Central and Carlisle will resume as normal.

We'd like to thank customers for their patience, and also our staff for their hard work in resolving this situation as soon as possible.''

Throughout the duration of the work, buses replaced trains between Kilmarnock and Dumfries on ScotRail's Glasgow Central to Carlisle services.
