A protest is expected to be held today (Thursday 14th June) over plans for Hunterston Port at Fairlie.

A company called CessCon Decom Ltd wants to use the site to decommission off shore infrastructure such as oil and gas rigs from all over the world.

It has posted a video on YouTube outlining the plans:

If given the green light, it could be up and running before the end of the year with the project expected to last around 25 years.

But more than 1,500 people have signed a petition against the move with concerns over the impact on sea life, the environment and local residents.

Many are expected to gather outside the Seamill Hydro today where a consultation is being held by Peel Ports, which owns the site. The event is on between 2pm and 7pm.

Hazel Atterson, 24, started the petition and says, "I was just completely shocked after seeing the plans they had for the site. I had no idea and my ultimate aim is just to avoid this happening altogether.

"We have so many important protected species and they would all be at risk from increased shipping traffic, digging, pollution and other consequences we are unable to even predict at this point.

"The environment is being jeopardised for profit. There is no other way of putting it."
