A prisoner slashed a fellow inmate after calling him “a pervert”, a court was told yesterday.

At the High Court in Glasgow 37-year-old Ryan Ingram admitted slashing 59-year-old Timothy McHallam.

The attack took place at E wing of Kilmarnock prison on July 28, last year, around 4.30pm.

Ingram walked past McHallam and slashed him. McHallam immediately put his hand to his face and saw blood.

The two men exchanged words. When asked what Ingram had said to him McHallam told police: “He said something like pervert or paedophile.”

The violent incident was caught on CCTV.

Prosecutor Bill McVicar said: “The complainer was cut from below his ear to his mouth. He now has a significant scar on the right side of his face.

“When the accused was asked by prison staff where the weapon was he said he had “flushed it.”

The court heard that Ingram, who is now a prisoner at Grampian prison, has previous convictions for assault and robbery.

Judge Lady Scott deferrred sentence on Ingram until next month at the High Court in Edinburgh for background reports and a risk assessment.
