Former chart-topper Will Young is facing being banned from the road after smashing into a parked car in the Borders.

The singer - who shot to fame as the winner of the first series of Pop Idol - pleaded guilty to a charge of careless driving in a letter to Selkirk Sheriff Court today (Monday).

Charged under his full name of William Robert Young, the London-based pop star admitted entering a lay-by in error, having misread the road layout, at excessive speed for the conditions, and colliding with a parked vehicle.

The court was told the driver of the other car was forced to jump to safety to avoid being struck by the 39-year-old singer, and both vehicles were damaged.

The drama unfolded in a northbound lay-by close to Sorrowlessfield Farm, on the cross-border A68, near Earlston, on January 21.

Noting a previous conviction, Sheriff Peter Paterson said Young - famous for hits such as Leave Right Now and The Long and Winding Road - was at risk of disqualification and deferred sentence until next month for a personal appearance.
