Thousands of people are signing a petition demanding more improvements at Dean Castle and Country Park in Kilmarnock.

Nearly £5 million pounds has already been invested to redesign the landscape, upgrade the visitor centre and cafe as well as create education spaces for school children.

But local childminder, Karen Simpson from Kilmarnock, claims the project is missing the basics and has started the petition.

She says, "There is not proper play equipment for younger children or those with special needs and disabilities.

"There are a few health and safety problems as well. For example the pond isn't covered or fenced off, yet there are 'play pods' being installed round about it which is a disaster waiting to happen.

"We received surveys when the money was initially made available to upgrade the park. But I don't think any of our ideas have been listened to.

"I didn't expect the petition to get as much support. I thought it was just me moaning all the time. It is a great park but people do feel the same way I do."

Work is still ongoing to improve the park as part of the multi-million pound proposals. We have contacted East Ayrshire Leisure for an update.
