Newmarket Street in Ayr will have its own Christmas lights this year thanks to McCoo creator Steven Brown.

The world famous artist has paid for lights, out of his own pocket, on the street which has been transformed into a hub of independent shops, cafes and bars.

It is also the home of the Steven Brown flagship store which includes sculptures of an elephant and gorilla on the lane.

He told West FM news, "Ayr was the town where I had my very first job and I spent a lot of my youth here.

"The support from local people has just been absolutely outstanding. It's good to be able to give back to a town that I have a lot of love for.

"And we're not going to stop there. Hopefully we'll be doing many other things into 2018."

The lights on Newmarket Street will be switched on at an event on Sunday as part of South Ayrshire Council's "Little Stars Light up Ayr."

Councillor Brian McGinley, South Ayrshire Council's Portfolio Holder for Economic Development, Tourism & Leisure said, "Every year thousands of people flock to Ayr to see the entertainment and I think we're in for an extra special celebration.

"Ayr remains a vibrant shopping centre and with the added attractions for our annual festival helping to add extra sparkle to the weekend, we're hoping the businesses will enjoy a great season in the run up to Christmas."
