We are being encouraged to get online to check blood stocks and make an extra effor to donate this week.

It is to mark Blood Donor Week in Scotland, an annual celebration urging blood donors to make an even bigger difference to patients needing blood across the country.

There are 8 different blood groups in Scotland and between 5 and 7 days worth must be maintained at all times.

During the summer months stocks can fall about 20%. So this Blood Donor Week we're being asked to regularly check stocks.

Dr Moira Carter, Associate Director of Donor Services says: "We value all of Scotland's blood donors and all blood types, but we may need some types more than others on any given day. Donors may think that because they have a common group it is less important that they give, but in fact the reverse is true."

O and A positive are the groups currently most needed by Scotland's patints.

You can find out your blood type by donating as well as visit www.scotblood.co.uk to see how much of your blood tupe is needed by NHS Scotland throughout the summer months.
