Nearly three quarters of a million pounds will be spent to transform Maybole Castle.

The money has been granted by the Scottish Government to bring the 16th century building on the High Street back to life and make it a key attraction for the South Ayrshire town.

It will be completely refurbished, along with the gardens, so visitors and locals can enjoy the historic building and grounds.

Communities Secretary Aileen Campbell said: “I’m delighted that alongside COSLA we are delivering a further £25 million of investment to support community led projects right across Scotland.

“This project will see a 16th century building brought back into use as a key asset for Maybole, creating new business and employment opportunities and contributing to the wider ambitions for regenerating the town.”

The project forms part of the £8m regeneration scheme to transform Maybole’s town centre with investment in the built environment, public realm, active travel routes, renewed shop fronts and grants to owners of historic buildings.

The project is funded by the Scottish Government, South Ayrshire Council, Historic Environment Scotland, National Heritage Lottery Fund, Sustrans and North Carrick Community Council.

Councillor Siobhian Brown, Economy and Culture Portfolio Holder for South Ayrshire Council said: “This fantastic funding boost for Maybole supports our ambitions for thriving towns which generate employment opportunities, support new and existing business and add to our world beating tourist attractions.”

Mark Fletcher, Chair of Maybole Community Council stated: “This generous grant from Scottish Government secures a sustainable future for the castle. It’s an iconic building in the town and we can now look forward to a fully revitalised high street that will make Maybole an even better town to live, work and visit.”
