Final Countdown For 10k Runners

Published 4th Sep 2015

The countdown is on to North Ayrshire Athletics Club’s 10k ‘Race the Prom’ this Sunday, 6 September and final preparations are well under way for the race, family fun day and fun run. The club will also be supporting North Ayrshire Foodbank on race day and is asking all entrants and supporters to show their support by bringing a donation on the day.

The club is also calling out for members of the public to line the streets on Sunday morning and come out and cheer on the runners as they pass through the three towns.

The route will start at 11am with a half lap at the track at St Matthew’s, before passing through Mitchell Place, onto Sorbie Road and through the plantation. After heading down South Crescent Road, runners will take the scenic route along the prom to Saltcoats, along Canal Street and down Auchnenharvie road past the leisure centre. Runners will then head into Auchenharvie Golf Course for a loop of the course, before crossing the blue foot bridge and along the ‘old cali railway line’. The final push for runners will be along Laighdykes Rd and Franklin Rd, up past the track with a loop of the playing fields, before returning to the track for a final half lap.

Club Vice Chair, Michael Murray said “The best vantage point for spectators will be along the Ardrossan/Saltcoats prom and along the old cali railway line. It really is great motivation for the runners having the support of the public to cheer them along the way. Hearing some enthusiastic encouragement from the public really does help you on your run and spur you on, especially for those who are running a 10k for the first time. This is a great sporting event for North Ayrshire, so please get out there on Sunday and give our runners a big cheer as they pass by.”

The family fun day will take place from 10am-4pm at the track with, facepainting, music, an inflatable village, craft stalls, a BBQ and bar. There will also be a 3k family fun run at 1pm and all entrants will receive a medal. The fun run is £3 (no charge for adults accompanying children taking part in the race), or wristbands can also be purchased for £5 which will allow entry to both the fun run and unlimited shots on the inflatables.

The Athletics Club is also delighted to support the North Ayrshire Foodbank on race day and is urging all entrants and supporters to bring along a donation on the day.

Club Chair Blair Pettigrew commented “We are a registered charity, providing great opportunities in athletics for a wide section of society. As the club is run completely by volunteers we understand and see the benefit in giving a little back to community.

We are delighted to be supporting North Ayrshire Foodbank at this weekend’s event. We will have collection pods at the registration area and in the arena and are appealing for all competitors and supporters to bring something along to donate. This could be tinned items, tea bags/coffee, instant mash, cereals, rice or pasta. We are anticipating over 1000 entrants/supporters on the day people and if everyone brought one item it would go a long way to help the foodbank and the community of North Ayrshire.”

There is still time to sign-up if you’ve been thinking about it but haven’t already done so. The 10k route has been officially measured by Scottish Athletics and all timing will be done by state of the art eclectic individual chip devices to ensure the most accurate of times. The race costs £12 to enter (£10 if you are a Scottish Athletics member). All finishers will receive a goodie bag which includes a sport fit specially designed MoreMile t-shirt and other sporting kit worth £20. To enter the race, visit www.entrycentral.com.
