As the school bell rings in a new year parents across East Ayrshire can rest easy knowing every school bus has been fitted with seat belts they've also removed all double deckers from their fleet of buses.

School transport powers have been handed over from Westminster to the Scottish Government and legislation comes into force in 2021 - but the local authority have implemented it now.

Councillor Tom Cook says: "We've decided to be one of the first in Scotland to have seat belts on every seat, we've also removed double deckers from all the routes."

"It's important we look after our young people, they are out furture after all. They are so used to putting on a seat belt when they go on the car - it's second nature to them - so it's only right they get the same level of saftey when they go on the school bus."
