A driver who attempted to hide pounds worth £1000 of cocaine between his buttocks has been jailed for more than five years after being caught in Dumfries-shire.

Anthony Collins was stopped in his car during a routine check on the A76 near Hollywood Village, on March 23 this year.

The 31 year-old gave police a false name - but officers also detected a smell of cannabis from the vehicle.

A total of £50 of the drug was discovered along with three mobile phones.

Collins was then searched at a local police station.

Class A drugs wrapped in a plastic bag

Prosecutor Louise Beattie told the High Court in Glasgow: "During this, a plastic bag was found in his buttocks."

This contained cocaine with a potential value of £1,000.

Collins today/yesterday pled guilty to being concerned in the supply of the drug, possession of cannabis, attempting to pervert the course of justice and disqualified driving.

Guilty plea reduced his prison term

It emerged he already had previous drug trafficking convictions - including a three years and four months prison stint imposed in Liverpool in 2011.

This meant he faced a mandatory seven year term today/yesterday.

Collins' lawyer Iain Paterson had argued against the minimum sentence due to the relatively low amount of drugs found and the age of the previous convictions.

But, Lord Matthews told Collins: "I have taken on board what has been said, but I am not persuaded there is anything unjust (in the mandatory term).

"This is your third conviction for class A drugs. You must know perfectly well you cannot do this sort of thing."

The judge, however, cut the seven year sentence to five years, 219 days due to the guilty plea.
