Coylton Primary pupils hands yellow cards for being late

Pupils at Coylton Primary School are being handed red and yellow football style penalty cards for turning up late to class.

The Council there say that the slips are to let the class teacher know the office has a record of the absence.

But, MSP Chic Brodie says he's had calls from concerned parents who say it humiliates pupils.

Douglas Hutchison, Director Educational Services at South Ayrshire Council said: “Coylton Primary staff care deeply about how children feel while they are in their care.

"However, they are also required to register all children attending school so that they know who is in school. It is also important that children learn that being on time matters.

"If a child arrives late at Coylton Primary, office staff register the child and then hand them a coloured slip which they give to their teacher. The slip lets the teacher know that office staff have logged the child’s attendance in the register, different colours are used to indicate if the child has arrived late as a result of an appointment or if they arrive before or after 9:30am.

"The slips simply ensure that the teacher knows the child is properly accounted for if there is an issue such as a fire alarm. As part of ongoing self-evaluation the school is happy to take account of views expressed by parents. ”
