Willie Rennie has been in the job since shortly after entering the Scottish Parliament at the 2011 election when Tavish Scott resigned after the party lost 12 seats and was reduced to 5 MSPs.
He pledged he would stand up to the ‘SNP bulldozer’.
Willie Rennie was previously an MP at Westminster.
One of the Lib Dems central themes for this election is education.
The party says it will expand nursery provision and reverse school and college budget cuts by putting 1p on income tax to raise half a billion pounds more.
It says a pupil premium would give schools the extra money to close the attainment gap following the example of what’s done in England and Wales.
On health there’s a pledge to invest in more staff and improved access to mental health services.
The Lib Dems also say they will train and recruit more GPs to avert a predicted shortage of family doctors in the next 5 years.
In law and order the party has criticised what it sees as a the centralisation of public services since the creation of Police Scotland and say they want to restore local accountability and ‘traditional policing’.
Among the Lib Dems environmental ambitions is a plan to exceed Scotland’s existing climate change targets.
The party also says it will prioritise warm homes, renewable heat, low-carbon transport as well as renewable electricity.
