Bomb disposal teams called as flare washes up on Ayr Beach

Part of the beach was cordoned off as the flare was destroyed.

A controlled explosion has been carried out at Ayr beach after a suspect device washed ashore.

Police and coastguard officers were called out around 10.10am this morning. (Wednesday 4th October)

The device was identified as a phosphorus flare and a 200m cordon was put around it.

Flares are a type of pyrotechnic which produces a bright light and can cause serious injuries if they explode.

It was destroyed around 3.30pm and the beach was reopened.

Nobody was injured.
