Today is National Bed Wetting Day and many people do not know that it is considered a medical condition in those over the age of 5.

We've been speaking to South West mum, Donna, her 9 year old son has been taking medication for the last 3 years to help with his bed wetting.

Donna says until they got medical help, she felt like she was failing her son.

She spoke to our reporter Natalie Crawford and says she would like more parents to open up...

Bed wetting can be considered to be a symptom that may result from a combination of different predisposing factors such as bladder problems, excessive urine production, difficulties waking up during the night, underlying health conditions and emotional problems.

The causes of bedwetting however are not fully understood. Only 17% of parents surveyed know what the condition Nocturnal Enuresis is.

New research, released today, has found that 46% of parents admit that their child is still wetting the bed at night once they have started school, yet only 9% of parents would discuss it with their friends or other parents.

The research also found that 1 in 5 (21%) parents believe their children would try to hide their bed wetting to avoid personal embarrassment, with this raising to 26% for children aged 15-18 years.

Only 23% of parents know where to find information if they are worried about their child’s bed wetting.

The long-term effects of the condition were also examined in the research and the results found that the condition prevents children from going on school trips or sleepovers (29%), affects their confidence at school (22%) and impacts their psychological and academic development (12%).

Dr Anne Wright is a specialist in the subject and June Rogets MBE has over 30 years experience working with children who wet the bed. They spoke to our reporter Natalie Crawford...
