A crash between a car and truck at Glengarnock Station this afternoon has fuelled concerns from parents that walking routes to the new Garnock Academy are not safe.

It happened at around 1 o’clock at the Daisybank bridge near the train station.

No one was injured.

Worried mums and dads say it's dangerous to expect kids to walk to school along the busy main roads in the area from Kilbirnie and Beith.

Councillor Jean Highgate who has been campaining for improvments along with the Longbar School Safety Concerns group says: "Even with the improvments that are being proposed the children will not be safe walking from either Kilbirnie or from Beith. There have been numerous accidents this year along this route and today's is just another one.

"It's a bad cumber on the road and no body pays much attention to the speed limit.

"Coming from Kilbirnie the pavements are narrow, there is talk of using the cycle paths but they are unlit. There are ditches and over grown shubery. The bridge at Daisybank itself is extremely dangerous."

A North Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “We are unaware of the specific details of this accident.

The safety of children is of paramount importance to the Council.

“A comprehensive range of road and footpath improvement measures is planned, including; a lowering of the speed limits to 40 mph between Longbar and Beith; a part-time reduction from 30mph to 20mph at the front of the school, on the B777 and on Caledonian Road by the use of flashing lights at the start and end of the school day; improved lighting and a guard rail on the route between Longbar and Beith, and a guard rail along the route from the Campus to Glengarnock Station."
