Plans have been approved for 20mph zones in four South Ayrshire villages to tackle speeding.

Drivers must obey new 20mph limits in Crosshill, Dundonald, Kirkmichael and Straiton and 30mph on certain streets.

A total of 30 road stretches in the villages face the new traffic rules.

The changes were given the go ahead at a recent South Ayrshire Council meeting.

Councillor Brian Connolly said, “Residents were happy in general to go along with it. There is always a concern about speeding particularly with HGVs.

“Police don’t have the resources to be there and regularly check speeds so enforcement relies on word of mouth and the community to get people to slow down.”

He said residents generally did not want heavy traffic-calming schemes such as speed bumps and opted for simple signs instead.

The speed reduction schemes aim to create a safer environment for walkers and cyclists.

Police Scotland raised concerns about the measures on some roads. It said it is highly unlikely, given the daily low volume of traffic, that 20mph entry point signage alone without some physical traffic calming features will cause drivers to significantly reduce speeds through the village.
