One Direction have been named the most influential Twitter users in the UK!

Each members of One Direction occupies the top five spots of the list put together by peerindex.com. The countdown rankings are based on influence on the social networking site rather than solely the number of followers users have.

Each person is given a score out of 100 with Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson all scoring 98 and Zayn Malik in fifth spot with 97.

Ed Sheeran is in sixth spot on 97, while Prime Minister David Cameron and TV host Piers Morgan also hold the same score. Journalist Caitlin Moran and comedian Ricky Gervais make up the rest of the Top 10.

Other pop stars on the countdown include Olly Murs (15th place), will.i.am (17th), Jessie J (20th), The Wanted’s Tom Parker (22nd) and Nathan Sykes (28th) and Rita Ora (40th).

PeerIndex founder Azeem Azhar said: "As Twitter has become more mainstream, the top 140 starts to resemble the contours of popular culture and power, the footballers, politicians and boy bands."

"However, social media’s democratising effects still allow those with challenging, well-defined or interesting views to build influence. Witness the number of independent media stars, like Marius Listhrop and Dan Howell and authors like Owen Jones and Caitlin Moran."

Corporate, brand and parody accounts were all excluded from the list.
