Disclosure and Bastille lead the charge with four nods each

Published 9th Jan 2014

Disclosure and Bastille lead the nominations charge at this year’s BRIT Awards with four nods each.

After scoring huge number one albums in 2013, both acts will battle it out in the same categories - British Group, British Breakthrough Act, British Single (Bastille for 'Pompeii' and Disclosure for 'White Noise' ft AlunaGeorge) as well as the coveted British Album of the Year.

!Dan Smith from Bastille said: "We're completely blown away by the four nominations ! When we started the band we never thought we'd be recognised in such a way so the whole thing is an awesome surprise"

Capping off a tremendous past year, Ellie Goulding picked up a trio of nominations in two separate categories - British Single for 'Burn' and 'I Need Your Love' with Calvin Harris, and additionally for British Female Solo Artist.

The singer, who will also perform at next month’s ceremony, said: “To be nominated at the BRIT awards is a huge honour.

“I will always remember how important the BRITs were to me every year as a child and how exciting they were. I'm so happy and grateful to be a part of it again this year- it really has been the craziest six months of my career.”

Elsewhere, Rudimental, Arctic Monkeys, John Newman, One Direction, Laura Mvula & Tom Odell also received two nominations.

Music legend David Bowie got two nods (MasterCard British Album of the Year and British Male Solo Artist) an incredible 30 years since winning his first BRIT Award.

Reflecting the growing popularity of social media, there will also be a new award this year – British Video. Viewers will be able to have their say on the shortlist of five videos on the night!

The nominations were revealed at the star-studded ‘The BRITs Are Coming’ event at the ITV Studios in London this evening.

James Corden will host the ceremony for the fifth and final time, making him the longest serving presenter in BRIT Awards history.

The presenter said: “I really love the BRITs. I'm such a fan. I'll miss not doing it after this one but fully intend to enjoy every second of BRITs 2014.”

Bruno Mars, Rudimental, Bastille, Arctic Monkeys and Katy Perry have previously been confirmed as the first live acts at the BRIT Awards ceremony.

Katy said of her upcoming live slot: “The BRITs has always showcased the music that I love and am influenced by. It's an honour to play at such a prestigious event where musicality shines at its brightest."

Following in the footsteps of Vivienne Westwood, Sir Peter Blake and Damien Hirst, this year’s BRIT Awards statue has been designed by fashion icon and hat designer to the stars Philip Treacy.

He said: “Music has always been my inspiration and I’m fortunate to have worked with some of the music industry’s greatest artists. My inspiration for the trophy comes from a uniquely British genre of music, Punk.”

Treacy has previously worked with artists including Madonna, Grace Jones, Paloma Faith, Cher, Cheryl Cole, Jamiroquai and Boy George, and designed Lady Gaga’s iconic mask and headpiece for the 2010 BRITs ceremony.

The 34th BRIT Awards takes place at London O2 Arena on Wednesday 19th February. The entire ceremony will be screened on ITV.
