Best Selling Singles and Albums of 2012 Revealed

Gotye and Emeli Sande both triumph

The biggest selling singles and albums of 2012 have today been revealed by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI).

Gotye’s collaboration with Kimbra ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ is the best selling song of 2012 with over 1.3million copies shifted.

The only other track to surpass the million barrier was ‘Call Me Maybe’ by Carly Rae Jepsen which sold 1.1million copies.

Australian songstress Sia appears twice in the top 10 – guesting on David Guetta’s ‘Titanium’ at number four and Flo Rida’s ‘Wild Ones’ in tenth spot. The song she penned for Rihanna, ‘Diamonds’, is also at number 11.

Total singles sales increased by 6% last year from 177.9million in 2011 to 188.6million in 2012, with the 20 biggest tracks all selling over half a million copies each.

Emeli Sandé’s ‘Our Version Of Events’ was the biggest selling album of 2012 by a country mile with almost 1.4million sales notched up.

Despite both being released in 2011, Adele’s ‘21’ and Ed Sheeran’s ‘+’ are at second and third spot with sales of 786,000 and 784,000 respectively.

Lana Del Rey, One Direction, Mumford & Sons, Olly Murs, Michael Bublé, Coldplay and Rihanna made up the rest of the top 10.

Contrasting to the growing singles sales, overall UK album sales dropped by 11.2% in 2012.
