Zayn Malik reveals why he really left One Direction

Admitted being in the band felt 'weird'

It’s the question the fans have been asking for months - why did Zayn Malik leave One Direction?

Some would think it'd be a risky move to leave a band in their prime to start a solo career. But for Zayn it seems like he felt he was escaping unhappiness.

In a recent interview, the singer admitted that it’s a nice feeling to ‘come out of a place where you’re told what to do’.

He explained that he felt there was little room for him to be creative and experiment when in the band, saying that when he sang lines a bit differently it’d be re-recorded 50 times until it sounded ‘pop’ and ‘generic’.

He went on to say his suggestions would be brushed off as they apparently didn’t fit the image of the band. He also wasn’t happy with what they were selling.

He admitted it felt ‘weird’ being the most famous boy band in the world while, he said, management controlled the image and music for them. He added “we were told to be happy about something that we weren’t happy about."

Recently the band’s mentor Simon Cowell said he knew Zayn would leave – before it actually happened. He said he wanted to protect the rest of the band after realising Zayn was unhappy.
