Internet reacts brilliantly to Boaty McBoatface name snub

The public are not happy

Boaty McBoatface may have topped the public vote but sadly it won't be the name of a new polar research ship. Announced today, much to the disappointment of many, a 'more suitable name' has been chosen.

The ship is to be named RRS Sir David Attenborough, after the world-renowned naturalist and broadcaster who will turn 90 tomorrow.

While Sir David has said he is "truly honoured" by the decision, many have taken to Twitter expressing their disappointment that the name winning the vote hasn't been chosen, including a satirical account from 'the queen', saying "Preferred Boaty McBoatface."

It's even spawned a gif from BBC Taster 'the home of new ideas' of their impression of what Boaty McBoatface might be like.

Gary Jackson on Twitter has even gone so far as to create a petition for Sir David to change his name to Sir Boaty McBoatface which has already had 35 people sign it at the time of writing.

Despite the disappointment that the ship won't be called Boaty McBoatface it is understood that a high-tech remotely operated undersea vehicle onboard the ship will be called the winning name.

However this has sparked a bit of debate as to whether the vehicle is a boat.

Long live Boaty McBoatface!
