One Direction fans went into meltdown back in 2012 when pictures of heartthrob Harry Styles and pop royalty Taylor Swift on a date together emerged, and now Harry has finally broken his silence on their short lived romance.

Ahead of the release of his self titled debut album 'Harry Styles' on May 12th, Harry has been on a promotional tour and recently opened up to Rolling Stone Magazine.

Speaking about his romance with Tay-Tay, the 23-year-old said, "When I see photos from that day, I think: Relationships are hard, at any age. And adding in that you don’t really understand exactly how it works when you’re 18, trying to navigate all that stuff didn’t make it easier.

“I mean, you’re a little bit awkward to begin with. You’re on a date with someone you really like. It should be that simple, right? It was a learning experience for sure. But at the heart of it – I just wanted it to be a normal date.”

Aww Harry! ❤️

It's also believed that after the break-up Taylor wrote a number of her hit singles about Harry including the tracks, 'Style' and 'Out Of The Woods'.

Revealing his feelings, Harry admitted he doesn't know if the tracks are about him but joked she's that good the songs are 'everywhere'.

Harry also opened up about what helps him write his own songs. He said, “I write from my experiences; everyone does that. I’m lucky if everything we went through helped create those songs.

“That’s what hits your heart. That’s the stuff that’s hardest to say, and it’s the stuff I talk least about. That’s the part that’s about the two people. I’m never going to tell anybody everything.”

The former One Direction star was asked what he'd say to Swifty in this present moment. Admitting he 'didn't know', Harry went on to add, "Certain things don't work out. There's a lot of things that can be right, and it's still wrong. In writing songs about stuff like that, I like tipping a hat to the time together. You're celebrating the fact it was powerful and made you feel something, rather than 'this didn't work out, and that's bad.' And if you run into that person, maybe it's awkward, maybe you have to get drunk ... but you shared something. Meeting someone new, sharing those experiences, it's the best s--- ever. So thank you."

Meanwhile Harry delighted his army of fans earlier in the month when he dropped his debut solo single 'Sign Of The Times'.

Teasing fans for weeks on his social accounts, the track finally dropped on April 7th and went straight to number one in the Official UK Charts.

Although no official video has landed, Harry was photographed earlier in the month dangling from a helicopter over the Scottish mountains, in what was believed to be the shoot for his debut solo video.

The 23-year-old appeared on Saturday Night Live with Jimmy Fallon over the weekend where he performed his debut track 'Sign Of The Times' for the first time ever on live TV.
