Eastleigh Borough Council remains under the control of the Liberal Democrats.

Liberal Democrats celebrating victory in Eastleigh

Liberal Democrats easily held the Eastleigh Borough Council, gaining one seat from the Independent group.

Leader of the Lib Dem group Keith House said: "There was a great set of results to for Liberal Democrats tonight - an absolute firm rejection of the Conservatives.

"Lib Dems held all the seats they were defending plus gained seats from the independents.

"The Conservatives didn’t really get close to the Lib Dems right away up across the borough."

Havant

Havant Borough Council remains under the control of the Conservatives.

In an unexpected turn of events, Conservatives failed to defend five seats in Emsworth, Hayling West, Hayling East, Bedhampton and St Faiths.

The Labour Party and the Liberal Democrats won two seats each, with the Green Party taking Emsworth.

The Conservatives held their seats in Hart Plain, Cowplain, Purbrook, Waterloo and Stakes.

Councillor Alex Rennie, leader of the council said: "Clearly it was a tough night for us, we lost five and we won five.

"If you look across the board it’s still a strong picture for Conservatism, I think if we look at Hayling Island and elsewhere we need to find out the reasoning behind those votes."

Portsmouth City Council remains under no overall control.

The Conservatives suffered a significant defeat in Thursday’s Portsmouth City Council elections, leaving the Lib Dems as the largest group but still lacking an overall majority.

A surging Portsmouth Independents’ Party doubled its total number of councillors to six, leaving it at a similar standing to both the Conservatives and Labour.

The Lib Dem group now has more than twice the number of councillors of any group with 18 but still fell short of securing a majority.
