Calls for 'ageist' road signs to be replaced

Critics say they stereotype older people as dependent and doddery

Campaigners are calling for a change to road signs depicting elderly people - claiming they're ageist.

The so-called 'bent bananas' signs are often found close to residential homes and retirement accommodation.

Critics say they stereotype older people as dependent and doddery.

EngAgeNet and Silver Marketing Association said: "Ever since they were introduced some 40 years ago, the “bent bananas” road signs often positioned close to residential homes and retirement accommodation have proved controversial, with accusations by campaigners that they stereotype older people as dependent and doddery.

"So, is it time to change them… or do they still serve a useful purpose in warning drivers that older people can be slow to cross the road? And, if a new sign is to take its place, what might that look like?

"We want YOUR views to inform a campaign which we are supporting with the Silver Marketing Association.

"It will take just a minute or two of your time, and your details will not be shared, but it would play a big part in ensuring that older people themselves have a say in the way they are portrayed."
