Bricks and stones thrown from Southampton motorway bridge
Police described what happened over the M271 as "incredibly dangerous"
There's anger in Southampton after bricks and stones were thrown at vehicles from a bridge over the M271.
It happened on the evening of Monday 1st February.
A lorry and vehicles on a car transporter were damaged.
Police say it's "incredibly dangerous". Redbridge Councillor, Lee Whitbread, has described it as "mindless behaviour which could have killed someone".
Hampshire Police released this statement about what happened:
We received a number of calls just after 5.30pm on Feb 1 reporting of a group of three young people seen on the foot bridge over the M271 throwing items at moving vehicles on the carriageway below.
It was reported that one lorry was damaged with what was described as a brick, and another, transporting cars, had stones thrown at it causing damage to the vehicles it was carrying.
Two of the young people were described by one driver as wearing dark clothing and the other a reflective jacket.
We deployed to the bridge to carry out a search of the area several times, however no one was located.
This kind of behaviour is incredibly dangerous to motorists and can not only cause damage, but could also result in serious injury or even death.
If you know who is responsible, please get in contact with us. Officers from Southampton West Neighbourhood Policing Team will continue to monitor the situation and follow up all lines of enquiry.
