Grimsby Town have made it into the quarter final after beating Southampton FC 1-2.

Around 4217 fans attended a packed out stadium at St Mary's. Crowds were roaring and inflatable Haddocks were everywhere in the away stand.

It came down to a VAR decision at the first half at the Premiere League Southampton side that saw Grimsby Town 1 nil up.

Gavan Holohan scored a penalty goal for The Mariners just before half time and then again in the second half to lead the way to the end.

It was a second goal for Southampton 65 minutes in as Caleta-Car found the back of the net with a tidy volley but an equaliser from Walcott was dismissed by VAR.

Grimsby Town, who are currently sitting at the 16th position in the Football League Two, faced Southampton in the Fifth Round tie. It marks the first time the Mariners have made it to this stage since 1996.

In the opening rounds of the FA cup, the Mariners defeated three Sky Bet League One opponents before hitting Championship promotion-chasers Luton Town 3-0 at Blundell Park in a Fourth Round replay, which secured them a tie last Wednesday. They entered the game on the back of a promising week that included a win at Northampton, followed by home draws against Harrogate Town and league-leading Leyton Orient.

Southampton FC, who are struggling this season and have already sacked two managers, and currently occupy the 20th position in the Premier League.

Despite their impressive 1-0 away victory against Chelsea a week earlier, the Saints suffered a 1-0 defeat at fellow strugglers Leeds United on Saturday, which left them at the bottom of the table and four points from safety.

The Mariners and Southampton have faced each other twenty-nine times in the past, with each team winning nine matches. The last time they met was in January 1978, when the Mariners lost 4-1 to the Saints in an FA Cup Third Round replay, which was the second replay after the initial match and the first replay both ended 0-0. The last time Town defeated Southampton was in December 1962 in a Division Two encounter.

The match was officiated by Thomas Bramall, who last refereed a Mariners match in September 2018 when he took charge of their home defeat to Yeovil Town. Derek Eaton and Steven Meredith were his assistants.
