The University is working with NHS Test and Trace to set up an on-campus testing site so that students without symptoms, who may be infectious but unaware, are able to get tested and asked to self isolate if they are, or reassured quickly if they're not.

From Monday 30th November testing will be available for all students and will be held at the University’s Allam Sports Centre between 8am and 6pm.

Lateral flow devices don't require a laboratory to process the test. Processing of these tests can be conducted at a dedicated testing site by trained personnel and can rapidly turn around results within an hour.

Use of lateral flow tests could significantly improve the detection of positive cases, so people can isolate themselves and prevent the spread of the disease. Asymptomatic testing will help to protect those at high risk, find the virus and help enable us to go back to as normal a way of life as possible.

The government is working closely with universities to get asymptomatic university students tested during the first week of December in order to help students return home safely for Christmas.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Susan Lea said:

“From the outset of COVID-19 in March, the safety and wellbeing of our students, staff and the wider community have been our top priority. We've worked hard to make sure all the necessary COVID-safe measures are in place to keep our community as safe as possible.

“Colleagues across the University continue to work hard to support progress with end of term arrangements for students to travel home or elsewhere during the ‘student travel window’ between the 3rd and 9th December. This includes support for those students who're travelling, as well as for those who will be staying with us on campus over the winter break.”
