Two men aged 31 and 56 were arrested yesterday night and are currently in police custody assisting police with enquiries.
The investigation continues as police seek to establish the circumstances leading to his death having confirmed that he died from injuries caused by a knife. The death remains unexplained as police undertake further forensic enquiries and take steps to confirm elements of Mr Smith’s lifestyle.
Detective Chief Inspector Wendy North from Humberside Police’s Major Crime Team said:
“Our investigation is progressing with two arrests being made last night. The two men in custody are being questioned by detectives at this time.
“A major part of the ongoing investigation is focussed on understanding more about the lifestyle of John Smith, who we are hearing was a private, mild mannered man. In order to understand how he came by his injuries it’s really important that we learn as much as possible about his movements prior to his death and also about his habits in general and who he regularly associated with.
“This is a serious incident and we are committed to investigating John’s death rigorously. We are appealing to anyone who has any information about any aspect of the investigation, details about John’s routines or the events of the days before he died, to call us. We would also ask anyone who was in the vicinity of Carnforth Crescent or First Avenue in Grimsby overnight Sunday 24 to Monday 25 May to come forward."
