There are major concerns about the number of people in Hull with liver disease.

It comes as people in the city have been undergoing free checks to see how healthy their liver is.

A roadshow yesterday in the city aimed at checking people over did find some with liver disease and they've now been referred for further treatment.

Nine in ten cases of liver disease are preventable

It was held by the British Liver Trust.

Liver disease is a significant public health issue in the UK, with more than 11,000 people dying from the condition each year.

Nine in ten cases of liver disease are preventable and those who are most at risk of developing liver disease include, people who are overweight, people who regularly consume alcohol and those who may have been exposed to viral hepatitis.

We spoke to Ryan Buchanan a hepatologist who took part in the event.

He told us: "Liver disease and specifically particularly liver scarring doesn't often come with symptoms people would notice."

"Therefore it's important for people with risk factors have tests to spot the condition."

Liver damage develops silently

"It's really important to reduce your risk of liver disease that you drink alcohol within the recommended limits."

"That works out to be about 4 or pints of beer or 4 or 5 glasses of wine per week."

Pamela Healy, Chief Executive at the British Liver Trust, said: “One in three of us are at risk of liver disease and the numbers of people being diagnosed have been increasing at an alarming rate. "

"Liver damage develops silently with no signs or symptoms and people often don’t realise they have a problem until it is too late."

"Although the liver is remarkably resilient, if left until symptoms appear, the damage is often irreversible."
