Staff whose union has claimed they have to eat and change in cleaning cupboards are set to protest outside Hull Royal Infirmary today (Tuesday, February 13).

More than 100 Hull Royal Infirmary workers, mostly cleaners, are set to protest outside the hospital and call for conditions to improve.

Liz Marshall, regional organiser with their GMB union, said they deserved to be treated with dignity and respect.

Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs the hospital, and contractor OCS have been contacted for comment.

The protest, timed to coincide with Valentine’s Day tomorrow, will call on bosses to show the staff some love and improve working conditions.

Union official Ms Marshall said it was time for management to start listening to their workers and put things right.

The regional organiser said:

“These workers are vital to the running of our hospitals, as without them the hospital trust would simply not be able to function.

“They have had to endure years of bad working practices.

“These workers deserve to be treat with dignity and respect. Not be forced to get changed in a cleaning cupboard or eat their lunch in a cleaning cupboard.

“Our members will be out in force today to show how strongly they feel.”

The protest follows separate walk outs from junior doctors based at the hospital in January in an ongoing dispute over pay.

The strike, which lasted from Wednesday, January 3 to Tuesday, January 9, saw doctors walk out at Hull Royal Infirmary, Castle Hill Hospital and Goole and District Hospital
