Reported cases of domestic abuse across the Humberside area rose by a third after England's first game at Euro 2016 - compared to a normal Saturday night.

In the first three days of the tournament, the force dealt with over 190 cases in total.

75 domestic abuse incidents were reported to Humberside Police following England's opening game in the tournament.

Almost all of the incidents took place inside the home.

Police say alcohol is a big contributory factor as to why cases increase during big sporting events like the Euros.

Officers are now warning that those carrying out such behaviour will be brought in to custody.

Detective Superintendent Matt Baldwin told Viking:

“Alcohol consumption has been found to increase at weekends, during the summer and public holidays, which also has a relevance for the timing of big sporting events like the Euros. We all enjoy a drink to celebrate a win or commiserate a loss, but it is important not to view alcohol as an excuse for ‘losing control’ and therefore perpetrating domestic abuse.

“The last two World Cups showed a national increase in domestic abuse. To safeguard and support victims, detectives from my unit will be deployed to do welfare visits, and discreet calls offering advice and support to victims. All perpetrators of domestic abuse will be dealt with positively and if deemed necessary brought in to custody.”
