Drivers in Grimsby have been warned that imminent repairs to three bridges in the town will cause travel disruption.

The repair work is expected to run from 26 February until August 2024, and cost £12 million.

The project involves the repair of the Gilbey Road flyover, Alexandra Dock bridge, and the Cleethorpe Road flyover.

Cllr Stewart Swinburn said: "It was decided by Highways England that this was emergency work that needed to be done. If we didn't there could be a total collapse of the bridges which would shut the road network down completely."

The Department for Transport have funded £8 million, with the remaining £4 million to be funded by North East Lincolnshire council. Cllr Swinburn said if the government funding is not spent by Spring 2025 it will be withdrawn.

"We're going to be open and transparent with people: it will cause disruption. But we're putting everything in place to try to minimise that disruption. The job has got to be done, we've got to get on with it as quick as we can."

One bridge at a time will be worked on to minimise disruption, with contraflows and reduced speed limits in place. There will also be overnight closures with localised diversions.

The council have warned the removal of existing tarmac will be noisy, and additional lighting will have to be left on overnight for the safety of workers.
