Parking could be limited for visitors to Cleethorpes
The council’s plans mean certain streets would be reserved just for residents
Cleethorpes visitors are set to be prevented from parking in many residential streets close to the seafront.
Permit zones would be created in two neighbourhoods from 8am and 6pm seven days a week if a plan going before North East Lincolnshire Council is approved.
Parking has been a long-time headache for residents and businesses in the area, who often struggle to park as the streets are occupied by visitors to the resort.
The council’s plans mean those streets would be reserved just for residents.
The scheme will begin on roads around St Peter’s Avenue and Market Street. Other phases would be potentially rolled out around Cleethorpes in future.
One permit zone is proposed for Cosgrove Street, Mill Place and Dolphin Street.
A second would be created on Glebe Road, Fair View Avenue, Crow Mill Avenue, West Street, Kew Road and a section of Mill Road.
The plan would create short-term waiting and loading zones for local businesses.
One-way systems would also be introduced on Cosgrove Street and West Street to improve the flow of traffic.
The council says the proposal would prevent obstructions for emergency services and waste collection lorries.
It would also distribute parking more evenly across the area.
Response to the plans has been mixed from residents and businesses.
While some have welcomed it, people living on Glebe Road – which is already part of a separate permit scheme – have opposed it as their spaces could potentially be taken by vehicles from neighbouring streets.
The council plan says the permit zones aim to “improve the parking availability for residents Monday to Sunday between the hours of 8am-6pm, by considering those streets that are currently under-utilised and those that do not have sufficient capacity to accommodate all residents’ vehicles and distributing parking more evenly throughout each zone.”
The scheme will be proposed at a special council meeting next week.
If approved, the Highway Authority will make the final decision on the details of the permit zones.
