Almost 80 schools and colleges in North Lincolnshire could be affected by teachers’ strike action on February 1.

Members of the National Education Union (NEU) are to walk out across England and Wales next Wednesday. The dispute is over teachers’ pay and funding of schools.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) has been told by an NEU North Lincolnshire branch rep that there are 78 educational settings which could be affected. These cover state-funded primary and secondary school education, and further colleges.

In total, there are 613 teachers in North Lincolnshire who could strike on Wednesday. Two weeks ago, on a 53 per cent turnout, nine in ten NEU teachers who voted supported taking industrial action.

The NEU is demanding an above-inflation pay rise for teachers and support staff. Most teachers were offered a pay offer of 5 per cent in September, well below double digit inflation levels.

But it is not just about pay, say the NEU. “We are taking strike action because we are concerned that cuts to teachers’ pay, and lack of funding for schools, are causing a crisis in education,” says NEU poster material targeted at parents and carers.

Separately, the National Association of Headteachers (NAHT) is taking action short of a strike on February 1 too. This includes no meetings after 5pm and refusal to engage with any school inspectors. Other strike and union action set to take place on Wednesday includes:

  • TUC holding a national ‘protect the right to strike day’ in protest against proposed Conservative government anti-strike law, requiring minimum service level in fire, ambulance and rail services.
  • RMT and ASLEF strike action over pay and conditions – this will be repeated on Friday, February 3, and on both days no TransPennine Express or East Midlands Railway trains will run.
  • More than 100,000 civil servants at the Public and Commercial Service union from across government, and including driving test centres, museums and airports, will strike over pay, pensions and job security
  • Over 70,000 members of the University and College Union (UCU) across 150 unis, including the University of Hull.
