Work on the M62 Ouse Bridge will continue until August 2024, National Highways have confirmed. Work begun in May 2022 after a cracked joint was found, and a further inspection found all eight joints needed to be repaired.

National Highways say the works have cost £7.9 million since April 2023, although they don't yet know the full cost of the project. The building work means a 30mph speed limit and contraflow have been in place since May 2022, and will remain until works are finished.

MP for Brigg and Goole Andrew Percy said: "It has been annoying for residents, but these works would have had to have been completed because the joints were due to be replaced in the next few years.

"At least this means we won't have the inconvenience in 2025/2026, so by the end of next summer it'll all be completed."

Around 90,000 vehicles use the Ouse Bridge on the M62, which is a key link from Hull across to Leeds and Manchester and down to Sheffield via the M18. While lane closures are in place for the work, the eastbound hard shoulder has been resurfaced, with improvements to the drainage.

Phil Jepps, Programme Delivery Manager for National Highways said: "The joint started to vibrate and further exposed the failure of the joint, hence why we had to put in the contraflow.

"I appreciate people are concerned about the speed limit but it is a necessity. We're trying to avoid a situation where we'd have to close the bridge. The increase in journey time is about eight to ten minutes - traffic is moving well, even if it is at a slower pace."
