Hull road to be renamed in honour of rugby legend Roger Millward
Garrison Road could become Roger Millward Way.
Former Hull KR legend, Roger Millward, is set to be honoured in Hull.
The local authority are proposing that a road is re-named in his honour.
Garrison Road could become Roger Millward Way.
Millward made 406 appearances for the Robins, scoring a club record 207 tries.
The leader of Hull City Council said the honour was to acknowledge the contribution the former Great Britain international made to the club and the city
The road serves as one of the key gateways into east Hull and Councillor Brady will now ask local ward councillors in the Riverside and Park areas to support the proposal for re-naming at a future meeting.
Millward is regarded as one of the greatest ever Rugby League players and was already an international when he joined Rovers from Castleford in 1966.
Following his retirement from playing he then served as a coach at the club, committing 25 years’ service, and was fittingly awarded the MBE for his services to rugby league in 1983 and inducted into the Rugby League Hall of Fame in 2000.
He sadly passed away earlier this year at the age of 68.
Leader of Hull City Council, Councillor Stephen Brady said:
“Roger Millward had a huge influence on rugby and was an honoured citizen of Hull for many years. Following calls from supporters and Councillor Chris Sumpton, I feel this is a fitting tribute to a man that worked incredibly hard and contributed so much to the city and to his beloved sport.”
Hull KR Chairman Neil Hudgell said:
“Roger was an icon of the game and a significant part of the rich rugby heritage in this city. Renaming a major road that carries thousands of vehicles into the east of the city daily is a fitting and permanent tribe to Roger. We are extremely grateful to the council, particularly Councillor Brady and Councillor Sumpton for moving this tribute forward so quickly.”
