A personal trainer from Hessle is taking on the world record for the most burpees completed in 24 hours to raise money for Hull charity Baby Unit Fund.

Martyn Pace's twin sons were born eight weeks premature, and survived thanks to the support from healthcare staff at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Hull Royal Infirmary.

Zach and Charlie - now just over two and a half years old - spent the first few weeks of their life in an incubator, and staff helped teach Martyn and his wife Helen how to look after and feed their sons.

Martyn said: "They wouldn't be here today with us if it wasn't for the care and support the Hull NICU team gave to us, so they're a really important cause for me because they've literally given me my twins.

"They do such an important job not just for me and my family but for thousands of people from around the city every single year."

Martyn is hoping to raise ÂŁ10,000 for the charity and take the world record of 9,119 burpees in 24 hours. As a personal trainer he's in good shape, but said it's taken nearly a year of hard cardio training to get ready.

He said: "I'm in the fittest shape of my life, I've already completed 4, 6 and 12 hours prior to this so I'm confident I can do the duration but it's whether my body can keep up with the pace - who knows how it will respond."

Martyn will be starting the challenge at 6PM today (8 December) and says people are welcome to come and keep him and his two Guinness world record adjudicators company at his Set the Pace Health and Fitness studio in Hessle.

At time of writing, the fundraiser is just short of ÂŁ5,000 with donations coming in thick and fast. You can donate to Martyn's page here.
