Hull City bounced back from their shock FA Cup defeat last weekend by extending their lead at the top of League One to four points after Tom Eaves' late goal secured a 2-1 victory over Doncaster - who boss Grant McCann managed before moving to Hull.

The Tigers were beaten on penalties by League Two strugglers Stevenage on Sunday in one of the upsets of the second round but Grant McCann's side made up for it against Rovers.

Josh Magennis' free-kick gave Hull a deserved lead midway through the first half and although Tyreece John-Jules swept home Josh Sims' right-wing cross after 81 minutes to level matters, Eaves had the final say.

Boss Grant McCann said:

“I thought it was a really good performance, bar a 10-15-minute spell in the second half were we just got a bit lax with our shape and they took advantage of it.

“They’re one of the better footballing teams in the league but I thought for large periods of the game we were very comfortable.

“We kept coming and coming and coming. My boys did everything to score another goal at 1-0. We hit the post, had shots blocked, the keeper made some really good saves.

“Sometimes you’ve got to give the opposition credit for their defensive abilities. I thought Doncaster did that and stood strong against us were some other teams may have wilted.

“We had to keep going. We conceded a goal off their first shot on target. I was really pleased to get the job done at the end.”
