Homeless charity find new site after being asked to leave Hull City Hall
Raise the Roof were asked to leave the steps by police last week, to make way for a new coronavirus vaccine centre
A homeless charity has moved into a bingo hall after being asked to leave the steps of Hull City Hall last week.
Raise the Roof were approached by police on Friday, who told them that the council needed to clear the area to make way for a new coronavirus vaccination centre.
The charity says it's now moved into Mecca Bingo on Anlaby Road, where they'll continue to give out free hot drinks, food and supplies.
In a statement, Hull City Council explained: “Work is currently under way to convert Hull City Hall into a mass vaccination centre as we continue to respond to the Covid-19 crisis. Unfortunately, as part of this important work, this group can no longer operate from the steps of City Hall.
“We work hard to make sure a comprehensive network of support is available for vulnerable people in Hull. The city has enough accommodation for those who might need it - no-one needs to sleep rough in Hull."
The new vaccine centre is expected to open later this week, and will be the first of its kind in East Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire.
