Hammonds of Hull has reportedly closed on a temporary basis.

The shelves are empty and the bar where bottles of alcohol were displayed have been cleared.

A few tables and chairs remain scattered around the shop floor.

The store announced its closure on Mondays and Tuesdays earlier this year but now the shutters are completely down.

Hammonds store first opened its doors in December 2021. It promised to deliver a vibrant collection of dining, organic grocery, retail, food, music and art offerings including artisanal food and beverage stations.

The company at the time said it would create more than 200 jobs and a platform for new and budding music artists.

It was hoped it would 'attract visitors from across Yorkshire and the Humber region; massively increasing footfall in the city centre.'

These shoppers in Hull said:

“I’ve only been in once and it didn’t think too much to it. I can see it being home to independent shops.”

Another said:

“I used to work at Picadish there back in the day and it was lovely, I said when it opened it wouldn’t last long because it’s far too expensive. It’s not like Hammonds was. I think if they did it differently then it would be more suited to Hull.”

Another shopper added:

“It was never going to work, we didn’t need it we thought we was going to get an independent market. We need something cheaper for the area.”

Their website is still operating with opening hours showing Monday to Sunday despite their being a sign on the shop window to say it's closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Hammonds of hull have been approached for a statement.
