Around half a million pounds are to be spent on building a new cycle path in Scunthorpe

The mile-long cycleway will connect cyclists from the town centre to Central Park, The Pods and the university.

It will also be lit up at night with eco-friendly low energy lighting, to encourage safe use.

Council representatives said that the plans should encourage people to use more sustainable transport opinions.

Cllr Tim Mitchell, cabinet member for connectivity, emphasised that green transport options need to work for people, providing function and connecting them to workplaces and leisure activities.

He said, “We have the backing from government – and the hard cash needed – to develop these plans.”

Cllr Rob Waltham, said, “We have received Government cash to enhance the cycle routes – ensuring people can travel safely in the way which best suits them."

He added that they are focussed on making sure the infrastructure is in place to encourage people to use more sustainable transport options,

Cllr Waltham also emphasised that switching from cars to public transport, walking or cycling has many benefits, not just for the environment but for people’s own health and wellbeing.
